Anyone working offshore in oil and gas is required to have offshore medical. Many people don’t know what offshore medicals are and what they entail. This article will explain all you need to about offshore medicals. Let’s get started!
What is offshore Medical?
A doctor will perform a series of tests and examinations to determine if a worker at an oil or natural gas operation is physically fit for work. If you do not pass the required medical assessment, then you cannot work in the oil and gas industry. Offshore Medical Certificates are based on the Oil and Gas [OGUK] Medical Guideline.
OGUK has set minimum fitness standards for all oil and gas workers.
What happens at the offshore medical?
A doctor or nurse must perform an offshore medical assessment on a vessel. The tests and examinations performed offshore are identical to those conducted onshore. You will only be required to take additional tests and exams specific to your position.
You will be required to perform the following tests during an offshore medicals evaluation:
- Consultation with a doctor
- Urine sample
- Blood test
- Hearing test
- Test your eyesight
- Test your lung function to ensure you are able to breathe properly
- Body mass index (BMI)
Before the assessment begins, you may be asked to fill out a lifestyle survey. The doctor can use this information to assess your overall health, and any health conditions that may make working offshore dangerous or affect your fitness.
How long is the offshore medical?
Most offshore medicals take about an hour. The doctor will issue a certificate once the test is completed and you have passed the offshore medical exam.
Why you should consider getting offshore medicals
Here are some reasons why you should undergo the offshore medicals exam, particularly if you work offshore in the oil or gas industry.
It is a requirement by law
