Substance abuse and drug addiction can have a negative impact on the mind, body and overall health. Relationship problems, poor performance at work or school, poor hygiene, impulsive behavior and physical changes can all be caused by substance abuse. Short-term effects of substance abuse include increased heart rate and cognitive ability, insomnia, appetite changes, etc. Substance abuse can have long-term effects such as anxiety, depression, high aggression and panic disorders.

It can be hard to overcome drug addiction, so prevention is the best option. Chronic substance abuse can lead to cardiovascular disease, respiratory issues, kidney damage and liver disease. Tips for preventing drug abuse are discussed below.

Do not succumb to peer and temptation pressure

Substance abuse is easily induced by staying with friends and family members who are addicted to alcohol and drugs. Stay away from family members who encourage you to abuse substances and build healthy friendships. You can also be influenced by peer pressure to abuse drugs and alcohol. Avoid peer pressure by avoiding those who are bad influences or avoiding peers that put you under pressure.

Mental health is crucial to your overall health and mood. Mental disorders are often accompanied by substance abuse. Seeking professional help early can prevent substance abuse. Working with a healthcare professional can help you cope with mental illness symptoms such as anxiety, depression or post-traumatic distress without resorting to alcohol or drugs. Mental health issues take time to treat, so you should be patient and follow your treatment plan.

Balance your life

Avoiding drug and alcohol abuse is possible by maintaining a balance between work, family, leisure and you-time. Stress occurs when something is wrong or missing in your daily life. Stress can be caused by overworking, lack of work, or loneliness. It will differ from person to person what the right balance is.

As you age, your preferences may change. To achieve a perfect balance in your life, you need to be able to recognize when something is too much and to have good time management skills. Burnouts are dangerous to your mental, emotional and physical well-being. Know when to take a rest and do something else.

It is important to surround yourself with people you respect, people who are driven and those who hold fast to their convictions. This will help you become a better person. By surrounding yourself with positive people, you can stay on track and prevent substance abuse. Associate with friends who share similar goals and enjoy healthy activities.
